Sensereo’s Airo Modular Air Quality System has been named one of five winners in the Best in Smart Home category at the IFA Innovation Award 2026, alongside established brands including Xiaomi and Dreame.
What makes Airo particularly interesting isn’t simply the sensors it contains, but how they are deployed. Rather than putting every sensor into a single air-quality monitor, Sensereo has designed Airo around a central Dock and a series of interchangeable wireless Pods that can be positioned independently around the home.
A Modular Approach to Air Quality Monitoring
Airo allows users to build an air-quality monitoring system around the conditions they actually want to monitor.
Each Pod is dedicated to a specific type of measurement:
- Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) helps assess ventilation and air freshness
- Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) measures volatile organic compounds released by sources such as furniture, paint and household cleaning products
- Particulate Matter (PM) detects airborne particles such as dust, smoke and allergens
- Temperature & Humidity monitors two fundamental environmental conditions
Because the Pods can be separated from the Dock, users can place different sensors where they are most useful. For example, a CO₂ Pod could be positioned in a bedroom to monitor overnight ventilation, while a PM Pod could be placed near the kitchen or another area where particulate levels are more likely to fluctuate.
Instead of buying an air-quality monitor with a fixed combination of sensors, Airo takes a more flexible approach: build the monitoring system you need, and position each sensor where it matters.


More Than Just Air-Quality Readings
Airo is also designed to move beyond simply displaying sensor readings.
Through the Sensereo app, the system monitors environmental conditions over time and is designed to alert users when air quality requires attention. By tracking trends, the system can help users identify recurring changes in their indoor environment and better understand what the readings mean.
This is an important distinction from traditional air-quality monitors, where users often need to interpret a collection of numbers themselves.


Matter over Thread
For smart-home enthusiasts, however, one of Airo’s most interesting features is its connectivity.
Airo is built around Matter over Thread, allowing it to connect with compatible smart-home ecosystems including Apple Home and Samsung SmartThings.
The Airo Dock also acts as a Thread Border Router, providing the Thread connectivity used by the wireless Pods.
This gives Airo potential applications beyond simply monitoring air quality. Once integrated into a smart home, environmental measurements could potentially be used as triggers for other devices. For example, turning on ventilation or an air purifier when CO₂ or particulate levels rise.
The use of Matter also means Airo isn’t limited to Sensereo’s own app, giving users greater flexibility in how the sensors fit into their existing setup.
Sensereo has also recently received the 2026 Thread Group Innovation Enabler Award, which recognizes emerging IoT companies for innovative applications of Thread technology.


Pre-Orders Now Open
Sensereo opened pre-orders for Airo on September 4, 2026, coinciding with IFA Berlin.
The Airo Starter Kit includes:
- Airo Dock
- CO₂ Pod
- TVOC Pod
- Particulate Matter Pod
- Temperature & Humidity Pod
The kit has an MSRP of $399 / €349, while the introductory pre-order price is $299 / €259. Shipping is currently estimated for Q4 2026.

Why We’re Watching Airo
Airo is an interesting addition to the growing Matter ecosystem because it approaches environmental sensing as a distributed part of the smart home, rather than as a single standalone device.
The combination of modular sensors, Matter and Thread could make it particularly useful for smart home automations where environmental conditions trigger other devices.
The real test, however, will come once Airo ships. Its Matter implementation, Thread reliability, sensor accuracy and the usefulness of its environmental insights will ultimately determine whether the modular concept delivers a meaningful advantage over conventional air quality monitors.
For now, Airo’s combination of modular sensing and open smart home connectivity makes it one of the more interesting environmental monitoring products to emerge ahead of IFA 2026.
